Manchester United ‘eyeing move for Dutch keeper Bart Verbruggen from Anderlecht’ with the 20-year-old a potential successor to David de Gea despite the Spaniard ‘agreeing to a new deal’
- David de Gea is expected to sign a new deal despite recent costly errors in goal
- It’s unlikely though that he would keep his No 1 position during the contract
- Manchester United are considering a move for Dutchman Bart Verbruggen
Manchester United are reportedly considering a move for highly-rated young Dutch keeper Bart Verbruggen from Anderlecht.
The goalkeeping situation at Old Trafford has been one highly debated in recent weeks, with David de Gea’s contract at the club expiring this summer.
De Gea’s place in the starting XI has been called into question after recent errors in United’s Europa League exit to Sevilla, as well as his costly mistake in the 1-0 loss to West Ham.
However. reports have suggested that the 32-year-old has agreed a contract extension in which he would take a pay cut from his current £350,000-a-week wages.
The Manchester Evening News have now reported that United are interested in signing 20-year-old Verbruggen – who was given his debut by Vincent Kompany two years ago.

Verbruggen could be seen as a potential replacement for David de Gea who has made a number of high-profile errors in recent weeks
Verbruggen has played 31 times for Anderlecht and received his maiden call-up to the Netherlands squad last month, as he was left on the bench for their European Championship qualifying win over Gibraltar.
Although De Gea looks likely to extend his stay at Old Trafford, it seems unlikely that he will remain United’s number one for the duration of his new deal.
The potential addition of Verbruggen could be the sort of signing to start the phasing out process of De Gea as their first choice keeper.
De Gea is not considered good enough with his feet to play manager Erik ten Hag’s preferred style of football.
No one has more Premier League clean sheets than him this season, but he has made a number of errors.
De Gea is likely to sign a new United contract though he could lose his starting place
All three of the goals United conceded in the second leg of their Europa League quarter final tie with Sevilla came from de Gea errors, while their recent 1-0 loss to West ham also came from a goalkeeping mistake.
United have been chasing David Raya as a potential replacement between the sticks, and may be planning to keep his fellow Spaniard as an important squad member and reserve keeper.
The Red Devils’ squad also includes Jack Butland and Tom Heaton, while Dean Henderson will return to the club at the end of the season following his loan spell at Nottingham Forest – although he is likely to leave.
