Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi has suggested that Marcus Rashford could emerge as a target for the French giants next year after impressing for England at the World Cup. Rashford has chipped in with three goals in four games over the course of the tournament so far and will be pushing to start for the Three Lions against France in Saturday’s all-important last eight meeting in Qatar.

Rashford was linked with a move to PSG over the summer after a difficult few years with Manchester United but ultimately ended up staying at Old Trafford, where he remains tied down until the end of the season as things stand. However, it seems as though Al-Khelaifi may be keen on reigniting his interest in bringing Rashford to the French capital if he fails to extend his stay at United over the coming months.

“He’s another player that is really amazing,” Al-Khelaifi told Sky Sports. “And for free? To have Rashford for free, every club would run after him, definitely.

“We’re not hiding it, we spoke before and [we had an] interest. But the moment was not a good moment for both sides. Maybe, summer, why not?

“Today if he’s a free agent of course we can talk to him directly but we are not going to talk to him now. Let him focus on the World Cup. Then after in January, hopefully, if we’re interested we will talk to him.”

It remains to be seen whether Rashford will end up signing a new deal at United or if he will decide to embark on a fresh challenge with PSG at the end of the season. He will be able to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with foreign clubs from the start of next month, which could see PSG muscle in to snap him up before the January transfer window closes.

United boss Erik ten Hag is planning to speak with Rashford and several other players after the World Cup regarding their contracts, though, with The Athletic claiming that the Red Devils want to resolve his situation as a matter of priority. Rio Ferdinand, meanwhile, has already suggested that United should be prepared to make Rashford their highest-paid player in order to prevent him from seeking a move elsewhere after his goalscoring exploits at the World Cup.

“I’ve got to be honest, I don’t know how United have let it get to this point,” Ferdinand told Vibe with Five. “The only thing I’d say in defence of Man United is he was out of form massively so they was thinking is he going to get his form back but if you gamble that then this happens, he has you in a vice-like grip saying: ‘Show me the money.’

“If I’m him, I don’t even negotiate it, I say to my agent: ‘You ain’t going in there, I know my value, I’m walking in there, sitting and saying who is the highest paid player at the club right now?’ And you say put a million a year above him.'”
