Lionel Messi has previously described himself as ‘not friends’ with Cristiano Ronaldo, amid reports that the latter wanted a move to Paris Saint-Germain to play with the Argentine.

Ronaldo now appears closer to a transfer from Juventus to Manchester City, with several reports suggesting that he has agreed personal terms with the Premier League champions.

The 36-year-old is seeking a move from the Italian side and Man City are one of few clubs who can afford his astronomical demands.

Juve are keen to offload before the player’s contract ends next summer having endured a tough time since they signed him in 2018.

PSG and City were touted as possible destinations but it now seems that the English side are frontrunners to complete a sensational transfer.

According to the Independent, Ronaldo wanted to play alongside Messi for the first time in his career by completing a move to PSG.

The Ligue 1 side complete a move for Messi earlier this month after it became clear that Barcelona would not be able to re-sign the forward due to La Liga’s player registration rules.

Both players are widely considered the best of their generation and have won a combined 11 Ballon D’ors. Luka Modric is the only player other than Ronaldo and Messi to have been awarded the gong in the last 13 years.

Their rivalry has been strongly debated over the last decade and fans have been split over which player is better.

Messi has previously described the pair as ‘not friends’.

Ronaldo suggested that he would like to go for dinner with Messi when they met at the 2019 UEFA Player of the Year awards.

Messi responded by saying that he would happily dine with the Portugal captain.

“Yes, I don’t have any problem with that,” Messi told BT Sport.

“We might not be friends because we’ve never shared a dressing room together, but I always see him at award shows and there’s no problem.

“I don’t know if there will be a dinner because I don’t know if our paths will cross for obvious reasons, each one of us has our own life and our own commitments.

“But obviously I would accept the invitation.”

It appears that the duo will continue to compete against each other next season rather than as a devastating attacking pair in PSG’s line-up.

Sky Sports have reported that Juventus want at least £25m for Ronaldo but his agent, Jorge Mendes, is trying to negotiate down that figure.

Portuguese journalist Goncalo Lopes was first to report news of Ronaldo’s agreement with City on Thursday. The player has apparently already spoken to boss Pep Guardiola about a transfer.
