Liverpool sporting director Michael Edwards has confirmed he will leave the club at the end of the season, leaving fans demanding one last piece of action. Edwards has been credited with building the current Reds side through his expertise in the transfer market.
Liverpool transfer guru Edwards is set to step down, leaving some pretty large shoes to fill.
Edwards has been at the club since 2011, and has been in his sporting director role since 2015.
In that time, he has overseen the signings of Virgil van Dijk, Thiago Alcantara, Mohamed Salah, Alisson Becker and Sadio Mane.
But Reds fans are hoping he has one last trick up his sleeve before he departs.
Liverpool are still locked in negotiations with Salah and his representatives over a new contract.
The 29-year-old forward is widely regarded as one of the best players in the world at the moment.
But Salah, who has scored 15 goals and provided six assists in 15 games across all competitions this season, will be out of contract in two years.
His current deal will expire in 2023, and so far there has been no update on a new deal.
Salah is believed to be willing to sign a new deal, but the club has been unable to agree terms on his salary.
Reports suggest the Egyptian wants a wage packet in the region of £500,000 per-week, which would shatter Liverpool’s current record of £220,000 per-week taken home by Virgil van Dijk.
However, Reds fans are hopeful that Edwaawrds will be able to pull off one last trick and secure Salah to a new deal before he departs at the end of the season.
Supporters flooded social media with messages encouraging Edwards to do what was necessary to keep Salah around until the latter stages of his career.
One wrote: “A new contract for @MoSalah would be a nice parting gift…”
“Hopefully Mike Edwards can sign off in style with a Salah contract renewal. Phenomenal job the guy has done!” Another posted.
One Reds fan wrote: “Announce Salah contract before you leave!!”
Julian Ward, Liverpool’s assistant sporting director, will be stepping into Edwards’ role at the end of the season.
