With a move for Adrien Rabiot off, United are now exploring alternative midfield options with Erik ten Hag desperate for some reinforcements in the middle of the park.

United are considering an ambitious move for Real Madrid star Casemiro with Caicedo also emerging as a possible option.

The Guardian report representatives of the Ecuador international have offered the 20-year-old to United. Caicedo only joined Brighton last year and after a brief spell on loan with Belgian side Beerschot, finished the 2021-22 campaign strongly with the Seagulls.

After an impressive start to the new season, Brighton have no intention of selling the midfielder, according Sky Sports. United however are still expected to make an offer.

United are long-term admirers of Caicedo and considered signing him last year before Brighton struck a deal with Ecuadorian side Independiente del Valle in February 2021.

Brighton have been able to command huge fees for some of their brightest stars over the last 12 months, selling Ben White to Arsenal for £50million last year with Marc Cucurella joining Chelsea in a deal worth over £60million this summer.

United are running out of options with the club’s hopes of signing long-term target Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona fading after months of fruitless negotiations.

The club turned to Adrien Rabiot earlier this month, agreeing a fee of around £15m with Juventus.

That move is now off however after United were unable to agree personal terms with the 27-year-old after ‘obscene’ demands from the player and his mother and agent Veronique Rabiot.

United have also suffered setbacks in their attempts to bolster their options up front. Benjamin Sesko was among the targets considered but the 21-year-old has now agreed a move to RB Leipzig next summer.

More recently, the club have made their interest known in Atletico Madrid forward Matheus Cunha – with some reports on Monday suggesting a £42million move was close to being agreed.

However, Cunha’s preference is to remain in Spain with Atletico viewing the 23-year-old as an important player for the future. Alvaro Morata, Mauro Icardi and Jamie Vardy has also been linked with moves to Old Trafford.
