Mesut Ozil once claimed that Jose Mourinho called him a "coward" and gave him a dressing down during a Real Madrid match.

Ozil played under Mourinho from 2010-2013 before they made their respective moves to Arsenal and Chelsea.

But it seems that the German never quite saw eye-to-eye with his manager, who took exception to his languid style which got him on the wrong side of plenty of Arsenal fans over the years.

According to Ozil, Mourinho claimed that the playmaker was only giving 50 per cent during one match and completely tore into him in the middle of the dressing room.

Writing in his autobiography, Ozil recounted: “You think two beautiful passes are enough. You think you’re so good that 50 per cent is enough.

“He pauses. Stares at me with his dark brown eyes. I stare back. Like two boxers at the stare-down before the first round.

“He shows no emotion. Just waits for a response from me. How much I hate him right now. And I love Mourinho actually.”

This led Ozil to tear of his shirt and throw it to the ground, which prompted an ultimatum from Mourinho which would surely have motivated the most despondent of players.

“Oh, are you giving up now? You’re such a coward,” added Mourinho.

“What do you want? To creep under the beautiful, warm shower? Shampoo your hair? To be alone? Or do you want to prove to your fellow players, the fans out there, and me, what you can do.”
