Neymar has made it clear he thinks Jadon Sancho should be in England’s World Cup squad. The Brazil superstar has described the Manchester United winger as an “incredible” player.

Sancho had a better start to his second season at Old Trafford. However, an illness which kept him out of action at club level this month prevented him from making a late surge into contention for Gareth Southgate’s squad to travel to Qatar.

The last of Sancho’s 23 England caps came in October 2021. But Neymar has made it clear he is a big fan of the former Borussia Dortmund star.

Neymar says Sancho and Harry Kane are England’s two standout players. The Paris Saint-Germain star didn’t seem aware when he spoke to the Telegraph that Sancho hadn’t made the cut.

Neymar said: “I really like (Harry) Kane and Sancho. They’re two incredible players and I have a special love for them because I like players that have their qualities.”

Sancho joined United from Dortmund in the summer of 2021 for a fee of around £73million. He scored just five goals in his 38 appearances in his debut campaign.

Sancho was first dropped by Southgate for the World Cup qualifiers against Albania and San Marino last November and was again not part of the squad for matches in March and June this year.

United team-mate Marcus Rashford has earned a recall for the first time since the Euro 2020 final. But Sancho will be watching the action in Qatar from afar.

Meanwhile, Neymar will be participating at his third World Cup. The 30-year-old believes a host of teams are in with a chance of winning the upcoming tournament. He added: “The World Cup is my greatest dream.

“It has been since I understood what football was. Now I’m getting another chance so I hope to make it.

“The World Cup is full of surprises. You get teams that unexpectedly get very far even in the competition even if many don’t believe in them.

“But I believe the favourites are Argentina, Germany, Spain and France. I think those four along with Brazil are fully capable of reaching the final.”

When asked about the Three Lions’ chances, he said: “I really forgot about England but obviously they have a chance!”
