Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is reportedly looking to strengthen his squad in four key positions this summer. Solskjaer is said to be after a centre-back, a central midfielder, a winger and a striker, with United hoping to build on their second-placed finish in the Premier League.

According to a report from the Guardian, Villarreal’s Pau Torres, West Ham star Declan Rice, Borussia Dortmund forward Jadon Sancho and Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane are among Solskjaer’s ‘preferred targets’.

The report also claims that Solskjaer would have targeted these same signings even if United had gone on to win the Europa League final.

The Red Devils were beaten on penalties by Villarreal on Wednesday, meaning they are still yet to win a trophy under Solskjaer.

Sancho is noted as the ‘most likely’ addition, while Kane is said to be ‘the most remote’, with Manchester City named as the favourites to sign the England captain.

Speaking after his side came up short in the Europa League final, Solskjaer admitted that he felt United need “two or three players to strengthen the starting XI and the squad altogether.”

He said: “We need to get better, simple as.

“We’ve done really well this season to come through a difficult start and no pre-season, losing three of the first six games.

“We pushed in the league and got closer to the top than we thought at that point.

“And we got to a final but you need to win these finals to make it a good season. We, who are here now, need to do better, work better, harder, cleverer.

“But two or three players to strengthen the starting XI and the squad altogether is important for us to go even further. I’m sure our challengers will also want to improve, so we’ll improve as much as we can.”

Rio Ferdinand believes the upcoming summer transfer window is “massive” for United, explaining that they need to ensure that any players they sign are “the right people, the right characters, and good enough players that add value to this team”.

Speaking to BT Sport, he said: “This window is massive, it’s a massive window for Man United now.

“The recruitment team, the owners, the CEO, the manager, the staff need to go out and recruit the right players that fit the bill, to take this team from getting to finals and can’t get over the line, to finishing the job.

“It needs to be the right people, the right characters, and good enough players that add value to this team.

“For instance, we always talk about Van Dijk being the catalyst for Liverpool over the last few years. What had he won in England before? He was at Southampton, they weren’t fighting for titles or in Europe.

“It’s the right characters, the right people who fit the team, the right profile to take you on and make the team better.”
