Barcelona forward Ousmane Dembele has been accused of being ‘ungrateful’ and ‘a liar’ over his contract situation, with manager Xavi said to be frustrated.

Dembele joined the club for £96million from Borussia Dortmund in 2017, but his deal runs down at the end of the season and he is yet to commit to a renewal.

Talks are ongoing over an extension beyond the end of the current campaign but, with no agreement, reached, the winger has been subjected to scathing criticism.

A report from Sport claims that Xavi has now ‘had enough’ with the stand-off, and even goes as far as labelling the conduct of his player as ‘indefensible’.

Taking further aim at Dembele, the publication has accused him of ‘cheating’ on his team, with his insistence he wants to stay at the Nou Camp savaged as ‘false’.

Barcelona have tabled several new offers to the superstar, but Dembele’s wage demands have proved a stumbling block and there is no end in sight for the saga.

Reports have indicated that he has demanded an eye-watering package worth almost £67m to stay put, a figure his club will struggle to stump up.

With less than six months left on his terms, he can now negotiate with foreign clubs to join them on a free transfer for next season, with PSG rumoured to be interested.

According to Mundo Deportivo, the Ligue 1 leaders are keen to being in Dembele if his current talks with Barcelona break down.

His time in Catalonia has largely been marred by injury woes and poor form. He has missed a large chunk of this season due to knee and hamstring problems.

Dembele returned to action in November and has played five LaLiga matches, picking up assists in consecutive matches against Elche and Sevilla.

This purple patch was brought to an abrupt end, though, when he was ruled out of the victory at Real Mallorca after contracting Covid-19.

Xavi has made one last attempt to convince Dembele to stay put, meanwhile, having said: ‘I hope he makes an effort and stays at Barca.’
