Ousmane Dembele has seen his contract talks with Barcelona break down as his deal expires at the end of the season. Manchester United could finally land their man – and at a fraction of the cost as a result.
United have been given fresh hope over signing Dembele after his contract negotiations at Barcelona broke down.
The France international will see his current terms expire at the end of the season, meaning he could leave for nothing in the summer.
That would be a massive blow for Barca, who splashed out a whopping £135m for his services.
However, the Catalan club cannot find the necessary cash to afford the forward’s wages despite both sides wanting to come to an agreement.
According to Goal, all parties have failed to come to a compromise and talks have failed, leading to a potential exit either in January or the summer.
The Blaugrana had proposed a mighty pay cut that stunned Dembele and his representatives while there are also disputes over agent fees.
The Spanish giants have been in a financial mess this season, even leading to Lionel Messi’s exit in the summer, though they were able to splash out on Ferran Torres from Manchester City in a £55m deal.
Barcelona might find that selling Dembele in the winter might be their best option to garner some cash or risk losing him for nothing.
New boss Xavi had been desperate to keep hold of the former Borussia Dortmund star after making attacking wingers his priority.
In fact, the Spaniard still retains hope that the situation can be rectified – but it is not looking good for Los Cules.
Several sides have already taken an interest in Dembele and foreign clubs can directly negotiate with his representatives from January over a pre-contract agreement.
United have long been keen on snapping up the forward and could enter the race for his signature.
It could be a perfect scenario for the Red Devils, who have seen the Frenchman as an ideal acquisition to bolster their attack.
Chelsea, Arsenal and Newcastle have also been linked with the 24-year-old, who was signed to replace Neymar in 2017.
However, it has not strictly to plan for the winger – who has been plagued by injuries throughout his time at the Nou Camp.
