Leeds star Kalvin Phillips will snub a move to bitter rivals Manchester United.

Phillips has emerged as one of United's leading transfer targets after helping England reach the Euros 2020 final last summer.

The fallen giants want to sign a holding midfielder and were planning to make a move for Phillips in the hope of luring him to Old Trafford in a £60m deal.

But Phillips has made it clear to those close to him he has no intention of leaving Elland Road for United next summer.

And the news will leave the door open for United's biggest rivals Liverpool to swoop in and make their own bid to land the 25-year-old instead.

It is understood Phillips, who is a cult figure at Leeds, has huge concerns about the possible ramifications for his family should he walk out on his hometown club for United.

Phillips' mum Lindsay and some of his siblings still live in the city and he is worried they would be targeted for horrendous abuse from Leeds supporters if he joined his club's most hated rivals.

Former Leeds stars including Eric Cantona, Rio Ferdinand and Alan Smith were all branded traitors after swapping the Yorkshire club for United in the past and targeted whenever they returned to Elland Road.

And back in 2011 former United boss Sir Alex Ferguson spoke of the "frightening experience" he witnessed when seething Leeds fans gathered outside his team's hotel ahead of a League Cup game at Elland Road.

Would Kalvin Phillips be a good fit for Liverpool? Let us know in the comments section.

More than a dozen police vans had to be called in to protect Fergie and his United stars – and he admitted afterwards the simmering hatred that exists between the two clubs was like nothing he'd ever witnessed.

He said: "I have always said Liverpool-Manchester United games are fierce in many aspects. But it never reaches the levels of Leeds United. Never.

"It was frightening at our hotel. We had seven police vans round the hotel protecting the team. Historically, it has been there for a long time. I don't understand it, but it's not nice."

Leeds, meanwhile, are desperate to keep Phillips and are still locked in talks with their talisman over a new and improved contract.
