Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang went full Odemwingie to try get Barcelona move done

Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang flew to Barcelona on Deadline Day in an attempt to seal a move to the Nou Camp in scenes reminiscent of Peter Odemwingie's efforts to join QPR in 2013.

Aubameyang, 32, has been out-of-favour at Arsenal since boss Mikel Arteta stripped him of the captaincy and left him out of the squad for a disciplinary breach in mid-December.

Arteta has not included the Gabon international in a matchday squad since the 2-1 defeat to Everton almost two months ago.

The Gunners have received a number of approaches for Aubameyang in the January transfer window, including from Saudi Arabian side Al Hilal and Italian giants Juventus.

However, with Barcelona also interested in his services – a switch to play under club legend Xavi was thought to be his preferred option.

Progress had been made in talks between Arsenal, Barcelona and Aubameyang, although the player surprised his current club by turning up in the Spanish city of his own accord on Deadline Day.

The forward took it upon himself to fly to Spain as Barcelona were not expecting him with negotiations still ongoing at the time.

However, the trip proved to be in vain as talks between the two clubs over a loan move broke down due to salary issues.

That's according to The Athletic, who claimed that the Spanish giants did not have the money required to conclude a deal.

Aubameyang's attempts to conclude a deal with Barcelona by travelling off his own back have remarkable parallels to the situation former Premier league star Peter Odemwingie found himself in in 2013.

Odemwingie, then of West Brom, believed he had secured a Deadline Day move to QPR and drove to the club's stadium, Loftus Road, thinking he was on his way to seal a move.

Instead, the now-retired winger was left outside the ground in his car and refused entry into the stadium after the clubs had failed to agree a fee.

Just like Odemwingie at West Brom, Aubameyang will now have to go back to Arsenal and see out the season despite having been on the brink of a Deadline Day move.

At least Odemwingie saw the funny side of the parallels between the two moves. He tweeted this afternoon: "Someone sent me the first picture. Am I passing the award on? Aubameyang just make sure you ask Aguero for advice."
