‘Unbelievably bad take, Jeff!’ Piers Morgan and Sky Sports presenter Stelling involved in Twitter spat as TV host is challenged on his view Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta should be SACKED after potentially missing out on Champions League football
- Piers Morgan and Jeff Stelling were embroiled in a Twitter row about Arsenal
- The talk-show host dramatically called for Gunners boss Mikel Arteta’s sacking
- Sky Sports presenter Stelling insisted Morgan, 57, was ‘wrong on this’ on Twitter
- Morgan was accused by Huw Merriman MP of being a ‘total idiot commentator’
Piers Morgan and Jeff Stelling have been embroiled in a Twitter argument about Mikel Arteta’s responsibility for Arsenal’s recent struggles.
The Gunners lost 2-0 against Newcastle at St James’ Park on Monday night in a hugely damaging blow to their Champions League hopes.
The result leaves Arteta’s side two points behind bitter rivals Tottenham with just one game left this season, and they are relying on beating Everton on the final day and hoping Spurs lose against already-relegated Norwich.
And a furious Morgan started sounding off on Twitter, insisting the boss should be fired as it looks like they will miss out on fourth spot and Champions League qualification.
He said: ‘Arteta should be fired. Instead he’s been given a new deal and massive pay rise. For abject failure. Utterly ridiculous.
‘We should have kept Aubameyang, got rid of Arteta & hired an experienced manager who can manage world class talent & whose process we can actually trust.’

But Stelling replied: ‘Piers you are not always wrong but you are on this. With this squad, Arteta has done exceptionally well.’
The 57-year-old then referenced the classic line from Stelling’s former co-presenter Chris Kamara, responding: ‘Unbeliev-ably bad take, Jeff!’
Hartlepool fan Stelling, 67, then tweeted: ‘Every fan believes his team should be the best but get some perspective. You have great young talent but huge gaps defensively and in midfield. Some of you rivals just have the huge gaps!’
Conservative MP Huw Merriman then joined the debate, saying: ‘As a true Arsenal fan, through the good times and the bad, please can I implore fellow Gooners to come together and rid this total idiot ‘commentator’ from any link to our club’.
Former Manchester City assistant and Gunners player Arteta signed a new and improved three-year contract in May.
The Spaniard embarked on a massive summer of spending ahead of this season, signing Ben White, Martin Odegaard, Aaron Ramsdale, Takehiro Tomiyasu, Albert Sambi Lokonga and Nuno Tavares – the highest net spend in the division.
