Porto star Mehdi Taremi wins Champions League goal of the season for 2020-21 with stunning injury-time overhead kick against Chelsea… beating Lionel Messi’s PSG screamer and Olivier Giroud’s acrobatics

Porto’s Iranian star Mehdi Taremi has won the official Champions League goal of the season award for the 2020-21 campaign.

The 28-year-old displayed stunning technique by plucking the ball from the sky in the final moments of the quarter-final second leg against eventual champions Chelsea, and hammering it in to the top corner with an acrobatic finish.

Taremi’s winning effort was confirmed by UEFA on Friday, with the footballing body uploading footage of the strike on their official website and social media channels.

Fans across the world had been asked to vote for their favourite strike of the competition.

UEFA’s Technical Observers selected their top ten goals of the season soon after the final had been played, in which Chelsea defeated English rivals Manchester City.

The shortlist of the best goals then went to a fan decision on Monday, May 31, with Taremi receiving more than 750,000 votes.

Olivier Giroud came in third place with his inventive acrobatic effort against Atletico Madrid

UEFA have revealed that almost 1.3 million votes were cast overall.

In second place came Lionel Messi’s exquisite long-range strike against Paris Saint Germain in the French capital, and in third Olivier Giroud’s acrobatical effort away to Atletico Madrid.

Also on the overall shortlist were Kylian Mbappe – for his blistering breakaway goal at the Nou Camp – and Neymar – for a sizzling effort against Istanbul Basaksehir.
