Manchester United were granted special permission from the Premier League to hand Cristiano Ronaldo his desired No.7 shirt at Old Trafford.
Ronaldo has taken back the legendary number he donned in his first successful spell at United after sealing an emotional return to the club this week.
Edinson Cavani had been in possession of it over the past year, but the Uruguay striker agreed to swap it for the No.21 shirt which was made vacant when Daniel James departed to join Leeds on Tuesday.
However, after already being allocated No.7 by United and wearing it in their 1-0 win away at Wolves last weekend, Premier League rules state Cavani should not be allowed to change his number.
According to journalist Jonathan Shrager, the Premier League will allow clubs to apply for permission to reallocate a shirt number midseason as long as they offer to compensate any supporters affected by the change.
United are said to have obliged, meaning Cavani was able to swap No.7 for No.21 and allow Ronaldo to take his favoured number.

The No.7 shirt has a special place in Red Devils history, with the likes of David Beckham, Eric Cantona, George Best and Bryan Robson also wearing it in the past.
Ronaldo scored 118 goals in 292 appearances while wearing it in his first stint at Old Trafford, capturing three Premier League titles and the Champions League.

Yet, United's famous No.7 shirt doesn't excite everyone, as £60million flop Angel di Maria recently revealed he "didn't give a f***" about receiving it.
Di Maria endured a miserable spell at the club after joining from Real Madrid in 2014, scoring just three goals in his debut season before being offloaded to Paris St-Germain.
Khabib admits what Cristiano Ronaldo told him about Man Utd one month before transfer
In a recent interview with Libero, the Argentine said: “I didn't give a f*** about the Manchester United No. 7, at first they talked to me a lot about it… it was just a shirt.
“My problem at Manchester was the coach. [Louis] Van Gaal was the worst of my career. I would score, assist, and the next day he would show me my misplaced passes. He displaced me from one day to the other, he didn't like players being more than him.”
