Ralf Rangnick’s days as Manchester United manager may be counting down towards their end but the interim boss is still looking towards the club’s future after calling up teenager Will Fish to the first-team.

With United facing an injury crisis, their hopes of reaching the Champions League next term appear to be coming to an end within the next five games.

Paul Pogba, Fred, Edinson Cavani, Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw are all expected to miss out through injury Rangnick has now turned to the club’s youthful ranks to help plug the gaps.

Will Fish has been called up to the Manchester United first team squad by Ralf Rangnick

According to UnitedInFocus, Rangnick has called up to Fish who has been training with the first-team ahead of their match against Chelsea at Old Trafford on Thursday evening.

Fish is no stranger to the first team and has even made his United debut, coming on as a substitute on the final day of last season under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in a 2-1 Premier League win at Wolverhampton Wanderers.

However the 19-year-old has failed to kick on this term with a loan to Stockport County in the National League seeing him play just 84 minutes of action across two games in the first half of the campaign before returning to Old Trafford.

He has since been a regular with the Under 23s at the club and has joined fellow youth stars Hannibal Mejbri, Alvaro Fernandez and Shola Shoretire with the first team group.

While Fish looks unlikely to start against the Blues at Old Trafford there could be a place in the XI for Hannibal who also made his debut at Molineux last term.

The midfielder featured again recently as a substitute in the crushing 4-0 defeat at bitter rivals Liverpool, but was praised by former Red Devils defender Gary Neville for his work rate and tenacity in his cameo off the bench.

Hannibal’s start could also see him selected ahead of Bruno Fernandes, with concerns the Portuguese star has become heavily fatigued and in need of a rest.

Interim manager Rangnick revealed that Maguire has joined United’s lengthening injury list and will miss Thursday’s game at home to Chelsea – leaving him with just 14 fit outfield players.

‘Harry Maguire is not available tomorrow, he has some issues with his knee,’ said Rangnick.

‘Not a big thing, a niggle with his knee. He didn’t train yesterday nor today.’
