Real Madrid players are worried that Zinedine Zidane will quit as manager after their Champions League defeat against Chelsea, reports suggest. Madrid were dumped out of Europe at the hands of Thomas Tuchel’s side at Stamford Bridge.

Madrid were disappointing as they crashed out of the Champions League on Wednesday night.

The Spanish giants had perhaps performed above expectations this season by making the semi-finals, but were second-best against the Blues.

Madrid failed to take any of their chances throughout the game at Stamford Bridge and were made to pay by Timo Werner and Mason Mount.

Zidane’s side are still in the hunt for a Spanish league title, and are in a close battle with Barcelona and Atletico Madrid for top spot in La Liga.

However, Madrid players are apparently concerned that with such a big squad overhaul to come this summer, Zidane won’t stick around.

The French manager has won four Champions League titles as a manager but there’s no hiding the fact his squad needs a lot of work this summer.

And with Florentino Perez adamant that funds are not available without the doomed European Super League, it seems any hopes of a big-spending transfer window are dim.

Zidane is under contract until 2022, and refused to commit to seeing out his contract earlier this year.

He was asked about whether he would stay until the expiry of his contract, and replied: “Well, we’ll see.”

Zidane then added: “We’re just focused on this season.”

Following Madrid’s exit from the Champions League, Spanish outlet AS reported that senior members of the first-team squad are starting to believe Zidane will walk away.

Madrid officials are also said to be worried about the possibility of the Frenchman leaving.

If he did leave, it wouldn’t be for the first time.

Zidane resigned as manager of Madrid in 2018 after Los Blancos lifted the Champions League for the third time in a row, citing a need for the club to change.

Just a year later, however, he was back in the hotseat at the Bernabeu.

And it seems he could repeat that act when the season ends this summer.
