Real Madrid are reportedly going to challenge the red card given to Sergio Ramos in the 2-1 defeat by Manchester City on Wednesday night.

The Madrid captain was shown a straight red card in the 86th minute after tripping up Gabriel Jesus through on goal with the scoreline 2-1 to City, meaning Ramos will now miss the decisive second leg.

And with Zinedine Zidane desperate to have his best side available, Madrid will appeal against the red – according to Cadena SER – as they look to overturn the 2-1 deficit at the Etihad on March 17.

Ramos receives his marching orders from the referee at the Bernabeu on Wednesday night

Ramos was largely untested for much of the first hour at the Bernabeu but City finally ramped it up a gear and caused Madrid’s defence a whole host of problems.

After Isco opened the scoring for Madrid in the 60th minute, Gabriel Jesus levelled things up before Kevin De Bruyne struck to clinch victory for the Premier League giants on Wednesday night.

And a fatal eight minutes for Madrid was compounded at the Bernabeu after Ramos was shown his red card for fouling Jesus on the edge of the penalty area.

The red took Ramos up to four sending offs in his long Champions League career – sharing a competition record, with only two other players in history picking up as many reds in Europe.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Edgar Davids both accrued four reds during their Champions League careers.
