Chelsea defender Reece James has admitted to communication problems with Thiago Silva.

The veteran Brazil defender made an obvious individual error in the lacklustre draw against West Brom last weekend, having mentioned his desire to learn the language quickly to help his progress.

The 36-year-old former AC Milan and PSG defender can speak fluent French as well as his native Portuguese, but is yet to nail English having only moved to the country during the summer.

Despite that issue, Frank Lampard has backed the central defender to learn quickly as James mentions his leadership qualities as a boost around the training ground and in matches.

James told the official Chelsea website: “He’s obviously a legend of the game.

“He’s played for numerous years at the highest level, been captain of PSG and Brazil, and he’s got so much experience.

“His English is not the best yet so sometimes it’s a little bit harder to communicate but there’s loads of other players who can speak both languages and he’s helped us all a lot.

“You can tell he’s a leader by the way he carries himself around the building and in training. He talks and helps everyone with his experience.”

Chelsea take on Crystal Palace on Saturday haven been knocked-out of the Carabao Cup by Tottenham in midweek, but Silva’s difficulty in speaking English will not be an issue following his tough debut.

Lampard said: "He will learn it quickly. I am sure some players do speak the languages that he speaks in the squad.

"He speaks French, being the main one, but we have lads here who speak Brazilian, Portuguese, Spanish and Italian so that one is again, if the language is a slight barrier, we need time to work. That's what we have in front of us."

Before adding: "We have seen that leadership already and people are going to want to talk about the second goal and that's fair play and that's the nature of being the top player that he has been all his career.

"But at the same time, we saw how he is, his leadership and his qualities and we are going to see more of that."

One issue for Silva is the way he left PSG in the summer, which he admits was far from ideal: "It’s a situation that annoyed me, I really didn’t like the way it was conducted."
