Chelsea’s negotiations over an improved contract for key defender James have reached a successful conclusion, with the 22 year-old set to put pen-to-paper today ahead of official confirmation from the club.

Securing the long-term futures of their most important players was among the top priority of the Todd Boehly-Clearlake Capital consortium following their Chelsea takeover.

James was part of the group of players on their list and his importance has been reflected in the size of his new contract.

It will also make him one of the best-paid defenders in Europe.

Sportsmail reported last month that Boehly wanted to introduce a US-style contract policy for players under the age of 25, locking them into deals for as long as seven years.

New signings Marc Cucurella and Carney Chukwuemeka signed up for six years and Wesley Fofana seven.

Armando Broja also extended his Chelsea stay by six years when he signed a new deal on Friday.

James is now set to follow with the finishing touches being put to his extension today.

Mason Mount and Edouard Mendy are two others also in talks over new Chelsea deals.

James has become a mainstay at Chelsea since making his first-team breakthrough during the 2019-20 season.

James made 37 appearances in that campaign across all competitions and 47 the following season.

Thomas Tuchel plays the defender regularly in the biggest domestic and European matches

He featured in 39 games last season, scoring six goals and contributing 11 assists.

James has started all five of Chelsea’s Premier League fixtures he has been available for so far this season, missing only the 2-1 defeat at Southampton last Tuesday.

He scored a goal in the 2-2 draw at home to Tottenham and contributed an assist in the 2-1 home win over Leicester.

James featured prominently during Chelsea’s victorious Champions League campaign in 2020-21 and has been capped 13 times for England since making his debut in a 3-0 friendly win over Wales in October 2020.

The defender is expected to be in Gareth Southgate’s squad for the World Cup in Qatar this winter.

He signed a contract through until 2025 not long after his 20th birthday in 2020 and his latest deal continues a commitment to a club he first played for aged six.
