Jeff Fenech provided an inspiring, albeit unorthodox, inspirational message for the Socceroos prior to their World Cup play off triumph over Peru – in which he told Graham Arnold’s stars ‘f*** Australia’.

Andrew Redmayne was the hero for Arnold’s plucky underdogs with the substitute goalkeeper’s wild antics between the sticks enough to seal the Socceroos’ place at the tournament in Qatar later this year.

Australia’s chances of progressing past their South American rivals were written off by many, with the Peruvians higher placed in the FIFA rankings, but boxing hero Fenech implored the footballers to pay no heed to the bookmakers in a video message shown to the players before the game.

Jeff Fenech told the Socceroos ‘f*** Australia’ in a motivational video message before Peru

He said, via News Corp: ‘Half the world, half of Australia might not think you can win but you guys, as a team, can beat anybody.

‘As individuals, that is what is going to be the big thing, you guys individually have got to play better than you have ever played.

‘You have got to make sure that you give that guy you are playing against hell. You’ve got to let him know that you are mentally prepared, you’re physically prepared and you are ready to do battle.

‘You’re ready to die out there for Australia. Not for Australia, as a matter of fact, f*** Australia, for yourself. You are ready to die for yourself. You are going to do this for yourselves, for you guys individually.’

Australia sealed their place in a fifth-consecutive World Cup after beating Peru in Doha

Although a slightly unusual outlook on international team sport, the message certainly did the trick as Australia nullified Peru and then held their nerve in the following shootout.

Arnold called Fenech just 10 minutes after Australia sealed their fate to thank the boxer for his motivating words before the game.

Fenech later revealed how a conversation with the Socceroos coach resulted in the video message being produced.

‘Arnie rang me and asked how I was feeling on my own before my world title fights. He asked me 100 questions and I told him how confident I was before each fight because of my preparation,’ Fenech said.

Fenech (L) cajoled the Aussie stars and said boss Graham Arnold (R) called him after the game

‘We spoke about a lot of things and he said: “Jeff, can you put a video together and say something to the boys”. Arnie said they were in awe and watched it so intently. They put some background footage in there.

‘Arnie rang me ten minutes after full-time. He thanked me and said he could see it was in their eyes when they watched it.

‘My exact words to him were to enjoy this moment because there is more hard work to be done. Celebrate now but there are more mountains to climb at the World Cup.

‘Those that doubted me just made me hungrier. I told Arnie that I wanted to win more for Johnny (Lewis, trainer) than I did for myself. I wanted to repay that faith he had in me. Arnie and I have this amazing relationship.’

JEFF FENECH’S SPEECH IN FULL

Hi guys, Jeff Fenech here. First of all, wishing you all the best of luck and believe me that I believe in you guys. I know you can win.

Me going out into world title fights, I was on my own. Everybody doubted me, everybody didn’t believe I could win but guess who believed and guess who won? I did.

Half the world, half of Australia might not think you can win but you guys, as a team, can beat anybody. As individuals, that is what is going to be the big thing, you guys individually have got to play better than you have ever played. You have got to make sure that you give that guy you are playing against hell.

You’ve got to let him know that you are mentally prepared,  you’re physically prepared and you are ready to do battle. You’re ready to die out there for Australia. Not for Australia, as a matter of fact, f*** Australia, for yourself. You are ready to die for yourself. You are going to do this for yourselves, for you guys individually.
