Rio Ferdinand urges Liverpool ace Diaz to “step up” and reach Mo Salah levels

Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has challenged Liverpool forward Luis Diaz to “step up” and start racking up the same numbers as Mohamed Salah.

The Colombian forward has proven to be a revelation since his £37.5million arrival from Porto in the January transfer window. While the timing of the move initially surprised many, it appears to be a master stroke from Jurgen Klopp as Diaz added extra energy and zip to Liverpool's Quadruple challenge.

Only Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy stopped Diaz from adding to his six goals and five assists this season, during Liverpool’s FA Cup Final triumph over the Blues. And Ferdinand believes Diaz may need to step up for the Reds, if they do lose Salah in the coming seasons.

“If you lose Salah, you are losing a guaranteed 30 plus goals a season,” Ferdinand said on the Vibe with Five podcast. “That is where Diaz would need to step up.

“In terms of excitement, enjoyment, and watching him, he is top, top, top. He is scoring but not at Salah rates.

“That’s what we are talking about and that’s the difference. Normally, what happens when a player like Salah leaves, it is down to the other players to step up.”

While he has been Liverpool’s star player this season, uncertainty around Salah’s future remains the only blot of this exciting campaign. The Egyptian winger has been locked in tense contract talks with the Merseysiders all season, with his current deal set to expire in the summer of 2023.

Salah has enjoyed an exceptional campaign, contributing 30 goals and 16 assists in 29 appearances in all competitions. However, he has been linked with a potential move to Barcelona, who are understood to be monitoring his situation intently.

But at present, Liverpool’s main concern is getting him back to full fitness ahead of their final Premier League match against Wolves and their enormous Champions League final clash against Real Madrid. Salah has admitted that he is particularly keen on facing Carlo Ancelotti’s side, after he was hauled down and forced to depart the 2018 Champions League final clash early through injury.
