In a parallel universe, Manchester United would have signed Robert Lewandowski over Robin van Persie back in the summer transfer window of 2012. The Poland international previously confirmed he held talks about joining the Red Devils back when Sir Alex Ferguson ruled the roost. Now, with the Bayern Munich hitman apparently seeking a move to the Premier League, the fallen giants could be tempted to act.

Manchester United will soon need a new striker.

Edinson Cavani’s time at Old Trafford is expected to end in the summer, when his contract expires.

Anthony Martial could leave United as early as this month, with the France international frustrated at his lack of chances under both Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick.

And if the Red Devils end the season in the Europa League places, rather than the Champions League, it’s hard to see Cristiano Ronaldo hanging around.

So what about Lewandowski then?

Sky Sports Germany reporter Marc Behrenbeck has claimed Lewandowski will look to leave Bayern at the end of the season, having achieved everything possible during his time at the Allianz Arena.

He said: “What we know about Lewandowski and his agent Pini Zahavi…

“Lewandowski really wants to have this one big move, to Spain or the Premier League. Really great markets for players.

“So Lewandowski and his agent will try to get this move in the summer.

“But until this time Bayern want to extend his contract. So what is happening at Bayern at the moment?

“The first point of contact is Lewandowski to extend his contract and if this doesn’t work they will be back in the game around Erling Haaland.

“But at the moment, they want to extend his contract.

“But Lewandowski is dreaming of Spain and the Premier League.”

United would, as one of the biggest clubs on the planet, of course be interested in Lewandowski.

He’s been in ridiculous form for Bayern this season, scoring 30 goals and clocking up three assists from 25 games across all competitions.

And with Martial, Cavani and Ronaldo’s futures all uncertain, it’s feasible they’ll be in the mix to secure his signature.

If United were to land the Poland international, it would be a whole decade after he held talks with the club during Ferguson’s time at the helm.

Speaking in 2020, the veteran elaborated on discussions and revealed he was extremely close to moving to Old Trafford.

“After my second year in Dortmund, I had a conversation with Sir Alex Ferguson,” he said.

“He wanted me to come to Manchester.

“I was very interested. I can even say I was ready. But Dortmund didn’t want to let me go.

“It didn’t upset me more than that because things were going well with Borussia.”

Ferguson also revealed in his autobiography, Leading, that Lewandowski was a player he’d been interested in.

“Mick Phelan and I had been to Germany to see the German cup final, to watch Shinji Kagawa, Robert Lewandowski and Mats Hummels,” he said.

In the end, however, the Red Devils decided to sign Van Persie instead.

The Netherlands international blitzed the Premier League in his first season, scoring 30 goals as the club won the title.

Yet his form waned under David Moyes and Louis van Gaal before he eventually left the club in 2015.
