Romelu Lukaku ordered on diet at Inter after returning from Chelsea ‘too heavy’

Romelu Lukaku has been told to go on a diet by Inter Milan after returning from Chelsea overweight, according to reports.

The striker, 29, was nurtured into the best physique of his career during his first stint with the Serie A club after arriving out-of-shape from Manchester United, now it appears he has returned to old habits.

Gazetta dello Sport claims Inter have once again put him on a personalised diet plan and are putting him through his paces on the training pitch as he's not in the condition he was when he left them.

Lukaku reached 101kg (15st 9lbs) thanks to their efforts when they signed him in 2019. Now he's back on loan for the season, the Nerazzurri are trying to get him back down to that figure again.

It worked wonders before with the Belgium international. He gained an extra yard of pace and had greater endurance, which led to returns of 64 goals and 16 assists during his two-year spell.

Back then he told Sky Sports Italia: "Since I joined Inter I have changed my diet and I can say that I have never felt so strong. My diet consists of salads for lunch, a lot of chicken breast, shirataki pasta.

Are Chelsea to blame for Lukaku's poor form? Let us know in the comments section.

"I don't change my way of eating much, for how we play we must have a very strong physique, we run a lot. Since I have followed this lifestyle I feel better on the pitch, I feel more reactive and faster.

"I've always been an explosive player with muscles but Italy took me to another level. I have never felt so strong. I have reached another level, physically and mentally.

"I consume a lot of carbohydrates after games. Most of the time I eat two packs of gnocchi, it depends on what the chef has prepared. They go into circulation quickly and they help me a lot."

Inter want Lukaku at his peak as his goals helped secure them the 2020/21 Serie A title. They'll be looking to wrestle it back from rivals AC Milan next season.
