Ronaldo ‘dealing with family issue’ as Man Utd star misses pre-season trip

Cristiano Ronaldo has been left out of Manchester United's pre-season trip to Thailand and Australia so he can "deal with a family issue".

The 37-year-old striker has yet to return for pre-season training due to reported family issues and the club have now confirmed that he has been granted additional time off to deal with said issues. New manager Erik ten Hag announced a 31-man squad for the tour on Friday, with the Red Devils set to play four matches during the trip.

Ronaldo is absent from the squad list, with United's official statement confirming: “Cristiano Ronaldo will not be in the party departing for Thailand as he has been granted additional time off to deal with a family issue.”

Six forwards have been included in the squad, though, with Tahith Chong, Anthony Elanga, Alejandro Garnacho, Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho all named by Ten Hag.

New signing Tyrell Malacia has also been included, along with a string of young stars, with United set to begin their pre-season schedule with a friendly against Liverpool in Thailand next Tuesday.

Ronaldo's absence from the pre-season trip comes after reports broke that the five-time Ballon d'Or winner wants to leave United before the end of the transfer window.

He is understood to be frustrated by the club's transfer business and their absence from this season's Champions League. Ronaldo has also been forced to take a pay cut due to the club's failure to qualify for the Champions League.

In addition to Ronaldo, three other players have also been left out of the touring party that will head to Thailand and Australia for the next stage of United's pre-season preparations.

Phil Jones will remain in England to carry out a specialist pre-season programme to prepare for the new season. Meanwhile, Brandon Williams will continue to work at Carrington due to a small issue obtained by the full-back.

United have also confirmed that Andreas Pereira has been given an extended break after returning from a loan spell in Brazil with Flamengo. Pereira is understood to be on the verge of a permanent move to Fulham, having undergone a medical with the Cottagers.

Following the friendly against Liverpool, United will face Melbourne Victory, Crystal Palace and Aston Villa in Australia during the trip.

The Red Devils' pre-season schedule will be completed on the final weekend of July with back-to-back friendlies against Atletico Madrid in Oslo and Rayo Vallecano at Old Trafford on July 30 and 31, respectively.
