Roy Keane has told his former club Manchester United they should be selling David de Gea this summer if they want to fulfil their aspirations under Erik ten Hag. The Spaniard is currently out of contract at the end of June but Ten Hag has already made it clear he intends to keep his No 1 at the club next season after he won the Premier League Golden Glove award.
Yet Keane is not of the same opinion as he believes the 32-year-old is now way past his best having cost his side a number of goals this season.
“United had to improve from last year, they were so bad defensively,” Keane said in the Sky Sports studio on the defensive improvements United have made this season.
“They’re patting him [De Gea] on the back there, De Gea but I would move him on quickly.
“He wouldn’t be for me, he’s not going to get Manchester United back winning trophies.

“United were bound to improve from last year so all this patting him on the head is ridiculous.
“You wouldn’t keep him as a No 2, he wouldn’t want to be a No 2.”
Micah Richards then added: “He’s done well for United though, do you not think?”
But Keane stood his ground, adding: “I don’t think so, it’s about what the team is achieving. He’s been making far too many mistakes.

“He was trying to leave the club a few years ago, he was trying to go to Real Madrid.”
De Gea had previously battled Dean Henderson for the No 1 jersey at Old Trafford but now the Spaniard has reasserted himself as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper under Ten Hag.
The Dutchman made it public after the 2-1 victory over Fulham, in which De Gea saved Aleksandr Mitrovic’s penalty, that he wants to continue working with the Spaniard.
“I have to repeat, last game, last week, every time, we want him to stay, he wants to stay, we will find each other,” said Ten Hag.
“It shows you can progress, it was a great save, it’s a step up in his performance. I think that it’s a symbol for our team during the season, good is not good enough, you have to do better, it was a great save in the right moment of the game. We turned the game and we won the game.”
United have previously been linked with a host of goalkeepers including Emiliano Martinez, Yann Sommer, Andre Onana, Jordan Pickford and David Raya.
Yet it appears if they are to sign another goalkeeper, they would have to earn the position of No 1 as opposed to immediately being instated as first-choice.
The Red Devils are instead expected to focus their efforts on signing a striker, a central midfielder and centre-back in the summer transfer window.
