Samuel Eto'o says former team-mate Thierry Henry was 'not on my level'

Samuel Eto’o gives withering assessment of his former Barcelona team-mate Thierry Henry in new documentary as he incredibly claims the Arsenal legend was ‘not on my level’… and even suggests Nicolas Anelka was a better player

  • Samuel Eto’o has claimed that he and Theirry Henry were not at the same level
  • The French striker was also not as good as Nicolas Anelka, according to Eto’o
  • Henry is widely regarded as the greatest Premier League striker in history

Samuel Eto’o has sensationally claimed that he was operating on a different level to his former Barcelona team-mate Thierry Henry.

The ex-Cameroonian striker played alongside Henry for two seasons at Barca, but believes the Frenchman was not on ‘my level’.

He further claimed that the France and Arsenal record goalscorer Henry – widely regarded as one of the greatest strikers of all time – was not even as good as compatriot Nicolas Anelka.

Eto’o’s attack on Henry surfaced after a leaked video was posted by Footballogue, and neither French striker has responded to the 41-year-old’s outlandish claims.

He said: ‘I think Thierry Henry was not at the level of Anelka.

‘Titi was good, but I knew players. I preferred other players. In any case, he was not at my level. The luck or the bad luck that I had me, was not to play for France.

‘Those who played in France had plus 70 per cent. It’s not because they were strong, but because France sells them better.

‘They sold them to us and brought them up to our level.’

Eto’o and Henry spent two seasons together under Pep Guardiola at one of the most successful Barcelona sides in history, winning a treble in 2008-09.

Furthermore, the pair combined for 11 goals in 57 games at the Catalan giants, although both were largely playing second fiddle to a young and upcoming Lionel Messi.

The Cameroonian and Anelka also spent time together at Barca’s Clasico rivals Real Madrid, though with both near the start of their respective careers, they failed to share a pitch together for Los Blancos in competitive football.

Prior to Henry’s arrival at the Catalan club, the now ex-Everton, Chelsea and Inter forward played down talk that the Frenchman might replace him at Barca, insisting the two could play in the same side.

He said: ‘That is not my problem. It is Frank Rijkaard’s one.

‘Some journalists wanted to create tension between ‘Titi’ and me. I am laughing. I have ‘Titi’ on the phone all the time. If he comes to Barca, thinking he will put Samuel Eto’o on the bench, I say “no”. We will play together. We will be team-mates.

‘I do not enter any controversy. I would like the coach to sign ‘Titi’. He is my friend.’
