Sheikh Jassim may get chance to seal Ansu Fati deal for cut-price fee

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag previews the Fulham game

Manchester United could revisit a previous transfer target this summer, depending on how ambitious the ownership in place will be as the takeover saga continues. Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani will want to make a splash if he buys the club from the Glazers.

The Qatari businessman and British billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe are waiting to learn who the Glazers have selected as their preferred bidders.

Both parties are reportedly keen to take control before the summer transfer window so they can start their reign with a bang by backing Erik ten Hag.

And Sheikh Jassim, in particular, is said to have plans to mark his arrival with at least one high-profile acquisition.

It could lead to United reigniting their reported interest in Barcelona winger Ansu Fati three years after missing out on his signature.

In the summer of 2020, Sport claimed that United had a deal worth around £133million in place through their strong relationship with Jorge Mendes.

However, Barcelona blocked the move because they considered the 20-year-old star too crucial to the club’s long-term project.

But Fati’s development has stalled since due to frustrating injury woes, which has limited him to just 11 La Liga starts this season and seen his price tag fall.

The Independent report that intermediaries are exploring a potential switch to Arsenal this summer.

And if he’s being offered to clubs, Sheikh Jassim could throw United’s hat into the ring if he wants to make a statement signing.

Given the club’s other targets and Financial Fair Play limitations, any move would likely rely on how much he is willing to invest through the Nine Two Foundation early doors.

Erik ten Hag has prioritised three positions heading into the summer transfer window – centre-back, central midfield and striker.

But United are also said to be interested in recruiting a goalkeeper and right-back as Ten Hag eyes to next stage of his rebuild.

The Dutchman isn’t in short supply of players of Fati’s ilk, with Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Alejandro Garnacho likely to be left-wing options next season.

Pursuing Fati would be a luxury more than anything else, which Sheikh Jassim would have the financial power to accommodate.
