Manchester United endured an afternoon of misery as Tottenham thrashed them 6-1 at Old Trafford.
Jose Mourinho returned to his former club and exacted a huge slice of revenge, inflicting United’s heaviest home defeat since 2011.
United actually opened the scoring in the first two minutes, with Bruno Fernandes converting a penalty.
But just five minutes later, they were 2-1 down as Spurs roared back through goals from Tanguy Ndombele and Heung-Min Son.
It then went from bad to worse as Anthony Martial was dismissed for a petulant slap on Erik Lamela.
With a man advantage, Spurs ran riot, goals from Son and Harry Kane before the break, meant the visitors went in 4-1 up at half-time.
And despite Ole Gunnar Solskjaer making changes, Tottenham continued their dominance and Serge Aurier scored just five minutes into the second period.
Their afternoon of pain was completed on the 80th minute mark when Paul Pogba conceded a penalty and Kane emphatically converted.
During Sky Sports’ coverage of the game, Gary Neville was particularly scathing of his old side’s performance, labelling them “pathetic” on several occasions.

Neville was then brutally honest when Luke Shaw cynically scythed down Lucas Moura in the closing stages. On first sight, the United legend predicted the left-back would be dismissed.
The replay showed Shaw made no attempt to win the ball and instead just looked to bring down the Brazilian winger.
And it was Solskjaer’s reaction that was telling as he saw another piece of ill-discipline spilling over.
As soon as Shaw smashed into Moura, the United boss turned round in resignation, believing he was about to see another of his players sent off.
Following the game, pundit Graeme Souness suggested FOUR United players should have been shown a red card.
The Liverpool legend claimed that along with Martial; Paul Pogba could have gone for a dangerous tackle, Eric Bailly for a stomp and Shaw for his robust challenge on Moura.
The result leaves Man United on just three points from their opening three games, having conceded a staggering 11 goals in just 270 minutes this campaign.
