Telles tests positive for Covid-19 as Man Utd defender faces spell out of action

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has revealed that Alex Telles has tested positive for coronavirus.

The Brazilian defender, who joined the Red Devils from FC Porto on transfer deadline day, made his debut in the 2-1 victory over PSG in the Champions League last week.

But he was not involved in the squad for the team that drew 0-0 with Chelsea on Saturday, nor the one which beat RB Leipzig 5-0 on Wednesday.

And speaking to MUTV after his side's victory against Leipzig Solskjaer confirmed that a positive COVID-19 test is the reason for Telles' absence.

With the player now needing to self-isolate for a period of time he is set to miss further upcoming matches, and certainly won't be involved in either Sunday's game against Arsenal or United's third Champions League game against Istanbul Başakşehir next week.

A statement from United on Wednesday night read: "Ole confirms that Alex Telles has tested positive for COVID-19. We wish him a speedy recovery and a swift return to the group."

Solskjaer did confirm that Telles was displaying no symptoms, and it remains to be seen exactly when he will be able to return to action.

The news comes after a hugely satisfactory night for United after a Marcus Rashford hat-trick helped them to the thumping over Leipzig.

On the game, Solskjaer said: "They do make you work, Leipzig. High press, counter press, the intensity, we had to dig deep and work hard for each other.

"Spaces open up when you're winning. Today was a day we had to rest a few, this season is relentless, we could use the squad.

"This group is coming together. We've added a few quality players, more quality you have and spirit you have the better chance of a performance."
