Thomas Tuchel can repeat one of Frank Lampard’s transfer successes as he looks to strengthen Chelsea’s defence. Lampard signed Thiago Silva on a free last summer, with the defender continuing to show his value to the Premier League title challengers – and Tuchel could have similar joy by signing a former target whose contract expires next summer.
Thiago, who turns 37 tomorrow, set Chelsea on their way to victory on Sunday when he headed home the opener in his side’s 3-0 win over Tottenham.
The former Paris Saint-Germain defender was the oldest scorer in the Premier League last season – and now looks set to repeat that feat after nodding home Marcos Alonso’s corner four minutes after the restart at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
But just as important as his goal was Thiago’s assured defending, with the veteran’s decision-making and reading of the game key to shutting out Spurs.
His performance showed Chelsea are still reaping the rewards of his free transfer last summer, after he helped steady the defence under Lampard before continuing to be a crucial player once Tuchel had taken charge.

But Thiago’s contract expires next summer, and Tuchel will be looking for a long-term successor after Chelsea were rebuffed in their attempts to sign Jules Kounde this summer.
The Stamford Bridge outfit are expected to renew their pursuit of Kounde when the transfer window re-opens after having a £43million bid turned down last month.
But Sevilla are likely to hold out for a much higher price, having reportedly wanted in the region of £68.5m for the 22-year-old centre-back.
And if Tuchel is looking for an alternative, he could reprise Chelsea interest in Bayern Munich centre-half Niklas Sule.

Niklas Sule was linked with a big-money move to Chelsea during the summer, and has reportedly put contract talks on hold as he weighs up his future.
That’s according to Bild journalist Christian Falk, who tweeted that negotiations between Bayern and Sule’s representatives will become “more concrete” in January.
However, the 26-year-old will also be free to talk to clubs from abroad once the January window opens – meaning Chelsea could strike a pre-contract agreement with the Germany international.
And that could see them land a top-class defender without the outlay they would need to splash out to prise Kounde away from Sevilla.

Sule has been a key man so far this season for Bayern, having formed a solid partnership with summer signing Dayot Upamecano at the heart of the defence.
Julian Nagelsmann’s side are top of the Bundesliga table having won their last four games, after opening the season with a draw away to Borussia Monchengladbach.
The defender has played in all five of those league games – including the full 90 minutes of four of them – as well as last week’s 3-0 thrashing of Barcelona in the Champions League.
He missed several games through injuries last season, and will be hoping to stay fit as Bayern target success on multiple fronts under new manager Nagelsmann.
But as contract talks continue, it remains to be seen whether Chelsea will try to land another bargain free transfer.
