Tottenham ‘approach’ Celtic for Ange Postecoglou with announcement close

Head coach Antonio Conte leaves Tottenham by mutual consent

Tottenham have reportedly approached Celtic over a move for their manager Ange Postecoglou, with Spurs chairman Daniel Levy now close to an announcement. Spurs have been without a permanent manager since Antonio Conte departed the club in March.

Postecoglou, who joined Celtic in 2021, led his side to the Scottish Cup on Saturday after already securing this season’s Scottish Premiership title and Scottish League. The 57-year-old has enjoyed a successful stint north of the border and also guided the Hoops to the Premier title and Scottish League Cup during his first season at the helm.

Postecoglou refused to commit his future to Celtic following the club’s latest trophy as he said: “I anticipate enjoying this moment for the next 24-48 hours, as long as I can, before someone drags me away and takes my attention away from enjoying something that’s been hard-earned.”

And according to The Athletic, Tottenham’s deal to take the manager to north London is expected to be finalised in the coming days.

Tottenham endured a miserable campaign during the 2022/23 season, despite remaining unbeaten in nine of their opening 11 Premier League matches. The Lilywhites’ form fell off a cliff either side of the World Cup in Qatar, which resulted in Conte heading for the exit. The Italian’s interim replacement Cristian Stellini lasted less than a month before ex-midfielder Ryan Mason steered the ship for the final month of the campaign.

But Mason was unable to turn the team’s form around and Spurs ultimately ended up missing out on securing any form of European football next season as they finished eighth in the Premier League table.

Postecoglou led South Melbourne to back-to-back Australian titles in the late 1990s before repeating the feat with Brisbane Roar more than a decade ago. He led Australia to Asian Cup glory in 2015 during a four-year stint as the national team manager before guiding Yokohama F Marinos to the Japanese title in 2019. But his appointment at Tottenham could be viewed by some as a risk due to his paucity of experience managing in the northern hemisphere.
