Transfer announced in Tesco as footballer strangely pictured by Clubcard offer

A National League signing has left fans in tears of laughter after the transfer was announced in a local Tesco.

Chesterfield FC, who compete in the fifth tier of English football, announced the signing of 21-year-old defender Bailey Clements from Ipswich Town on Saturday (June 18). The young full-back held up a Chesterfield scarf as he grinned with delight following his free transfer.

Yet it was very different to your average transfer announcement photo as Clements was snapped on the drinks aisle of a Tesco store with a clubcard offer visible under his left arm, much to the amazement of the club’s fans on Twitter.

One Twitter user wrote: “The fact the photo is in Tesco is absolutely amazing,” while another added: “Sensational content.”

When quizzed on why the photo was taken in the supermarket, one user commented: “For the last 12 years everyone has seen rumoured players in Tesco. So they decided to make it true.”

Clements is set to join the Spireites on July 1 after 14 years at Ipswich. He had loan spells at Hemel Hempstead, Dagenham & Redbridge and most recently at League Two side Stevenage, before linking up with manager Paul Cook once again.

Clements said: “I’m really excited and looking forward to getting going. Linking up with the gaffer again, it was a no-brainer to come here.

“I’ve heard a lot of good things about the club and the town itself. A couple of loan spells haven’t gone exactly as I would like, but I’m now ready to make an impact.

“[Paul Cook] was a massive factor. He gave me my opportunity at Ipswich, he put his trust in me and I like to think I repaid him.
