The January transfer window rumbles on as managers around Europe look to strengthen ahead of the second half of the season. It isn’t easy to complete dealings at this stage of a campaign, but clubs are positioning themselves to make a statement or two before the January 31 deadline. Express Sport brings you today’s latest news, gossip and developments in the ever-changing market.

The Premier League’s ‘Big Six’ have remained in the wings so far this month, but that could soon change.

Arsenal are eyeing a midfielder and striker as links to Fiorentina frontman Dusan Vlahovic continue to gather pace.

Will Chelsea pursue a left-back to replace Ben Chilwell, who could miss the remainder of the season through injury?

Meanwhile, Newcastle’s hunt for defensive reinforcements will likely intensify after their shock 1-0 FA Cup defeat at home to Cambridge United on Saturday.

JUST IN: Tottenham may have Traore transfer blocked by four Barcelona players

There is yet to be movement in Tottenham Hotspur, but Antonio Conte will undoubtedly expect backing in the next few weeks.

Club chairman Daniel Levy recently travelled to the Middle East to meet owner Joe Lewis about making funds available for Conte, with Adama Traore on the agenda.

And will Liverpool move for a forward to bolster Jurgen Klopp’s ranks whilst Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane are at the African Cup of Nations?

  • Milan eye Bailly deal

AC Milan have identified Manchester United defender Eric Bailly as a transfer target as they search for defensive reinforcements this month.

Sky Italy report Bailly is one of three centre-back candidates, and the Rossoneri would be open to a loan with an option to sign him permanently this summer.

Milan are unsurprisingly scouting the Premier League after the success of Fikayo Tomori at the San Siro.

And Bailly would likely be interested in a move after falling to fourth in the pecking order at Old Trafford.

    Newcastle’s defensive masterplan

As we enter the second full week of the January transfer window, expect more movement in the market from Newcastle United.

Eddie Howe has already added Kieran Trippier to his squad in a £12million deal, but his sights are now set on central reinforcements.

And the Magpies could back him with not one, but two established names to contribute to a defensive revamp.

    Amad to Birmingham is OFF

On Saturday, reports emerged suggesting Manchester United winger Amad was closing in on a loan move to Birmingham City until the end of the season.

However, Fabrizio Romano reports that after further talks, the deal has broken down between the two clubs.

Amad will ‘100 per cent’ leave the Red Devils on loan this month, with the Ivorian teenager’s priority an English club.

Arsenal discuss move for Brazil star

Arsenal are in talks to make an offer for a Brazilian midfielder.

Arsenal want to sign a central midfield player after losing Mohamed Elneny and Thomas Partey to the Africa Cup of Nations.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles has also joined Roma on loan, meaning Arteta is now considerably light in midfield.

Ronaldo holds crisis meeting with agent

Cristiano Ronaldo’s agent Jorge Mendes has jetted to the UK for a crisis meeting about the 36-year-old’s current situation.

According to The Sun, Ronaldo is starting to believe returning to Old Trafford in the summer was a mistake.

The Portuguese icon has grown frustrated with Manchester United’s lacklustre style of play and isn’t happy with life under Ralf Rangnick.

A source said: “He desperately wants his United move to be a success, but he is starting to recognise that winning trophies with the current set up could be a real struggle.”
