Trevoh Chalobah in Stamford Bridge throwback when ex-Chelsea ballboy saw Messi

Trevor Chalobah made his Chelsea debut in the Super Cup final on Wednesday – and hours later showed just how far he'd come with an Instagram throwback to when he was ballboy watching Lionel Messi at Stamford Bridge

Chalobah, 22, joined the Blues at the age of eight.

He signed his professional contract in June 2016 but has been made to wait for his first-team debut, spending time on out loan with Ipswich Town, Huddersfield Town and Lorient.

The Sierra-Leone-born star was handed his first start in the UEFA Super Cup final against Villarreal and impressed to such an extent that Thomas Tuchel conceded Chalobah has given him something to think about.

Hours after the match, the centre-half posted an image to Instagram showing just how far he'd come.

Captioned: "UEFA ball boy nights, time flies, dream big," the picture showed Chalobah performing ballboy duties as Messi walks towards him to take a corner during a Champions League match between Chelsea and Barcelona at Stamford Bridge.

The snap has so far received over 75,000 likes and hundreds of comments congratulating the defender on his rise to the first-team.

Can Trevor Chalobah challenge for a first-team spot at Chelsea this season? Let us know in the comments section.

Kei Kamara wrote: "Dreams come true when you wake up and work for it … good job big man."

Someone else said: "I'd rather have this guy in the team than any new centre back we're looking to buy."

While Tammy Abraham replied with a heart emoji.

Chalobah's performance against Villarreal has certainly given Tuchel food for thought going forward.

"He has forced his way into my thinking," said Tuchel.

"He played good games against Bournemouth, Arsenal and Tottenham and we wanted to have guys on the field who were capable of playing 90 minutes.

"Trevoh was the very first in training and he is physically strong. He deserved to play because of his performances so far.

Chelsea are reportedly on the lookout for a new centre-half, with Jules Kounde touted for a big-money move to Stamford Bridge.

But maybe the Blues already have their man in the form of the impressive Chalobah.

"He was very strong again," Tuchel added, referencing the centre-half's performances during pre-season.

"He suffered in some moments, but later with Azpi at his side and Jorgi close to him and helping him tactically, he stepped up again.

"He never lost face, he stayed calm and he was physical enough to play 120 minutes.

"It was again quite impressive, so he forced his way into our thinking. Let’s see where he goes.

"We still have some days to decide his personal future but at the moment he shows his value to the team."
