- The UFC welterweight champion will play in Soccer Aid’s game on June 11th
- Edwards will join the likes of Usain Bolt, Tommy Fury and Stormzy on World XI FC
- The Birmingham fighter claimed it was ‘an honour’ to be selected for the match
UFC welterweight champion Leon Edwards has been selected to play in this year’s Soccer Aid match at Old Trafford.
The Birmingham fighter has had a whirlwind of a year, after winning his UFC title from Kamaru Usman in August last summer and then defending it recently in March.
His popularity has been on the rise for some time now and it seems that his hard work inside the octagon has finally been rewarded with opportunities outside of it.
It was confirmed on Tuesday that ‘Rocky’ has been selected as the starting goalkeeper for the World XI FC side, which he later described as an ‘honour’.
On signing up for Soccer Aid, Edwards said: ‘It’s an honour for me to be playing and helping raise money for such a great cause.

The Birmingham fighter recently made a defense of his UFC title at the O2 Arena in March
‘Come and support us – Soccer Aid is a great family day out. Through MMA I have built a great platform and fanbase. I hope others will support me in raising money for children and families across the world.’
Edwards has become one of the biggest names in MMA, after he became just the second British UFC champion since the promotion began in 1993.
His win over Usman was historic but his defense of the title, which came recently at UFC 286, was even more impressive.
A dominant performance across five-rounds at the O2 Arena saw him retain the title and put an end to his long-standing rivalry with Usman.
Edwards’ next bout inside the octagon is yet to be confirmed but fans can presume that it will be a title defence against American Colby Covington later this year.
The Brit will join a team that will be captained by sprinting icon Usain Bolt. Former Tottenham and Republic of Ireland striker Robbie Keane will be among the coaches for the World XI outfit.
Celebrities such as Tommy Fury and Liam Payne will also be playing alongside the current UFC welterweight champion.

The England team will include former Three Lions stars such as Gary Neville, Paul Scholes and Jermain Defoe, while Sir Mo Farah is also set to feature once more.
Chelsea women’s manager Emma Hayes and Harry Redknapp will be in the dugout for England.
