West Ham have opened talks with Marseille over a £20million deal for defender Duje Caleta-Car.

The Croatia centre back is available as the Ligue 1 club need to sell to meet FFP requirements.

Manager David Moyes has turned to the 24-year old after seeing a series of bids rejected for James Tarkowski of Burnley, Wesley Fofana, now of Leicester, and Fiorentina’s Nikola Milenkovic.

Caleta-Car has been reluctant to leave as he wants to play in the Champions League with Marseille drawn in the same group as Manchester City, Porto and Olympiakos.

He would prefer to leave next summer but West Ham hope to convince him a move to the Premier League will give him a greater platform.

Time is of the essence with the transfer deadline approaching and West Ham are prepared to offer the 6ft 4ins former Red Bull Salzburg defender a lucrative contract.

Should West Ham fail to persuade Caleta Car they could yet turn to Craig Dawson of Watford.
