What Liverpool going top of the league before Chelsea vs Spurs means to Mourinho

Tottenham Hotspur have got off to an excellent start this season, with Jose Mourinho's side going top of the table with a 2-0 win over Manchester City last week.

Spurs have been tipped as genuine title challengers this season and they face another tough test in the form of Frank Lampard's Chelsea, who sit third.

Liverpool, who are second on goal difference, have the chance to go top before Tottenham's showdown with Chelsea but Mourinho does not believe a positive result for the Reds will have an effect on his side.

Asked if there was extra pressure going into the Chelsea game as a result of their good start, Mourinho replied: "Maybe we don’t go there top, maybe Liverpool get a point or a victory at Brighton and then we don’t go there top of the league, so we don’t know.

"Going there top or Liverpool top doesn’t change anything for us. As I’ve said since the beginning of the season, we are only contenders to win the next match, nothing more.

"So, we are going to be there, three possible results, we know anything could happen, but we go there and our objective is to win the game."

When asked what Tottenham need to do to beat Chelsea, Mourinho said: "Score more goals than them!

"We go to win, like we always do. Against Manchester City, we went to win. It’s going to be difficult, but, not easy for them.

"It’s always difficult to play Chelsea. If I’m not wrong, the last 16 years they won the Premier League five times, and they didn’t finish in the Champions League positions only once, so this is a team that is used to playing for titles, lots of players, big investments, great squad.

"They have an amazing squad, so I’m not even worried about who is going to play, because they only have very good players."
