Why Man Utd boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer hasn’t played Angel Gomes much this season

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer hasn’t been playing Angel Gomes much this season because of uncertainty over the player’s future, reports say. The Red Devils playmaker’s contract expires at the end of the season and, unlike the likes of Tahith Chong, Mason Greenwood and Brandon Williams, is yet to pen an extension.

Manchester United gave Gomes his debut when he was just 16, with Jose Mourinho throwing him on as a substitute in a win over Crystal Palace on the final day of the season in 2017.

And he remains highly-rated three years on, with both Chelsea and Barcelona eyeing him ahead of the summer transfer window.

United want Gomes to stay at the club, with Solskjaer saying as much recently.

But the player himself is hesitant to sign a new deal, unhappy with the club’s current offer of a contract worth £25,000-a-week.

Gomes has made just two appearances in the Premier League this season.

And the Manchester Evening News say he hasn’t been playing because of his contract situation.

KEY STORY: Man Utd owners the Glazers set asking price and demands for club sale after ‘two meetings’

  • What Man Utd told Mason Greenwood about Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

United boss Solskjaer only wants players who are fully-committed to the cause.

That’s why he turned down deals for the likes of Paulo Dybala and Christian Eriksen during the summer – because he thought the pair only wanted to join because of the money the Red Devils were prepared to pay.

And with Gomes unconvinced as things stand, it’s unlikely he’ll feature too much unless the situation changes.

With the coronavirus causing chaos across the world, Gomes may have to sign weekly extensions at United if the season goes on.

But, despite that, there’s no guarantee Solskjaer will throw him into the mix.

  • What Man Utd have said to Gomes’ representatives about Greenwood

Meanwhile, speaking recently, former United wonder kid Febian Brandy sent a warning to Gomes about his future.

And he insisted Old Trafford was the best place for the 19-year-old to be.

“Whatever team you are at, even if you are at Barcelona and you are coming through the ranks. Let’s say Angel Gomes is at Barcelona, and his situation is the same. If United came knocking on the door then you would be getting a big excited,” Brandy told MEN Sport.

“I think it is one of them ones where I think Angel needs the right people around him.

“He needs to be given the right advice and I think whatever decision he makes it will be a good one.

“In my eyes I think he should stay at United because Ole knows about him and thinks very highly of him, but then Angel needs to weigh up his options.

“Is he going to breakthrough at Barcelona?

“But then again La Liga football might suit the way Angel plays.

“It is just one of them ones when it comes to crunch time only Angel will know what he is going to do.

“But, I do know Ole would like to keep him.”
