Why Man Utd missed out on PSG defender Idrissa Gueye in the summer

Idrissa Gueye would have added much needed midfield steel Manchester United needed… but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer failed to push for a deal for the PSG star in summer

  • Gueye was on United’s radar last summer but the club never made PSG an offer
  • Senegal international would have been open to moving to Old Trafford
  • Deal never materialised as United couldn’t sell Nemanja Matic and Jesse Lingard
  • Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has regretted not signing Gueye as United have struggled

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s plans for defensive stability this season took a blow during the summer when Manchester United failed to follow up on a deal to sign PSG’s Idrissa Gueye.

Concerned about Nemanja Matic’s form and unsure if Paul Pogba would be staying, United’s recruitment negotiator Matt Judge turned to the prospect of signing Gueye as holding midfieler after West Ham’s Declan Rice was priced out of the market.

Judge ascertained that 32-year-old Gueye, who has Premier League experience with Aston Villa and Everton, would move to Old Trafford with his wife as he feared PSG’s glut of summer signings including Gini Wijnaldum would see him frozen out.

Gueye was reportedly open to a switch to Old Trafford amid fears of being frozen out at PSG

Matic is the only pure defensive midfielder in Solskjaer’s ranks with Pogba, Fred and Scott McTominay all enjoying getting forward.

The United boss addressed the problem at Spurs yesterday by switching to a formation that used three central defenders — and a handsome 3-0 win certainly suggested they are a more complete unit without the suspended Pogba.

But after having various meetings and conversations over the Gueye deal, United felt they weren’t able to make a firm offer because Matic, Pogba and Jesse Lingard all stayed at Old Trafford.

It’s been a source of regret ever since and United’s defence has collapsed on numerous occasions with little protection from the midfield.

Meanwhile, the Senegal international has been in top form for PSG, providing extra insurance in front of the back four to give Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe and Neymar freedom.

Gueye has also scored four goals —including a cracker in the Champions League win against Manchester City.

The lack of a reliable holder has put Pogba’s role in the team under renewed scrutiny. For every good thing the French star has done this season, he’s given the ball away to cost his side.

Pogba was critical of United’s performance following a 4-2 defeat at Leicester but he was the one who carried the can by being dropped after that.

Paul Pogba’s second spell at Old Trafford could end this summer when the Frenchman could leave on a free transfer if he doesn’t sign a new deal

He was sent on by Solskjaer when United were 4-0 down to Liverpool last weekend but promptly gifted Mo Salah his hat-trick goal and then got sent off.

Pogba’s time at United is stuttering to a sad conclusion.

In the final year of his contract, there is no willingness on United’s part to pay top dollar to make him stay, and agent Mino Raiola is not going to sanction a move in January as this would cut into Pogba’s post-United earnings when he’ll be available on a free transfer.

United are mounting a PR campaign to pretend they are calling the shots and claiming they are relaxed to lose him for nothing in the summer at a massive cost but it’s not the way the Glazers like to work.
