World’s ‘most beautiful’ footballer earned call-up by copying Cristiano Ronaldo

Grasshopper star Ana Maria Markovic – who has been dubbed the 'world's most beautiful footballer' – credits Cristiano Ronaldo for her international call-up.

Markovic, who grew up in Switzerland, represents the Croatian national side. However, don't expect to see Markovic at Euro 2022 in England this summer, with Croatia failing to qualify for the major tournament.

But the 22-year-old is still proud of her international debut last year, and she credits the Manchester United superstar for the chance. Speaking to 20min, Markovic said: "[Luka] Modric is definitely a great role model for me. He is a world footballer and represents Croatia.

"There are many good players among the women, such as [Ramona] Bachmann.

"But my absolute favourite player is Cristiano Ronaldo because he's just so disciplined. I think it's super important that you give your all in sport and have a good mindset like him."

Markovic has since gone on to make five appearances on the international stage, and she notched her first goal for Croatia against Moldova in November.

Markovic also explained how she's flattered when she's labelled as 'beautiful' but hates being called 'sexy'.

She added: "I liked the articles that called me the most beautiful footballer or one of the most beautiful because it makes me happy to hear that I am beautiful.

"But then newspaper articles appeared in which I was described as the sexiest footballer. I didn't like that."

Markovic started her career with FC Zurich, but after failing to make an appearance for the Swiss side she made the switch to Grasshopper in 2020.

The 22-year-old has since gone on to make 40 appearances for the Swiss side – notching five times.
