Adelaide Cup 2021: Tralee Rose snares perfect barrier draw

In-form stayer Tralee Rose looks like starting one of the shortest-priced favourites in the race’s history when she lines up in the $400,000 Group 2 Adelaide Cup at Morphettville.

Former jockey and Adelaide Cup winner Clare Lindop was called upon to take a lucky dip draw on behalf of the connections and she picked up the handy barrier five for the $1.90 fancy.

Trainer Symon Wilde said Tralee Rose was in top shape for the Cup.

“She has done really well since her last run and we are looking forward to coming over for the race,’’ Wilde said.

“Drawing five we will leave it up to Jason (jockey Jason Holder) as he handled her very well at her last start in the Lord Reims and he knows the track so well.

“She is a very versatile type and can handle either tempo but this will be a tougher challenge.

“And it was apt that Clare drew the barrier as we knew each other at a pony club in Warrnambool back in the day.’’

Seventeen runners are expected to face the starter on Monday.

Tralee Rose, who has impressed with strong staying efforts recently, has lost just once in her past six runs, finishing second to Miyake at Flemington in December.

Last month she blitzed her opposition in the Lord Reims Stakes (2600m).

Last year’s Cup runner-up Good Idea, trained by Phillip Stokes, drew barrier one.

In a further boost to Cup day, the leader in the Victorian jockeys’ premiership battle Jamie Kah, and three-time Melbourne Cup-winning jockey Kerrin McEvoy, will return to their home state to ride Starcaster and Long Arm respectively.
