Graeme Carey Previews, Tips and Best Bets for Doomben Saturday 10th April

At the past two Doomben meetings where the going was heavy, 12 of the 16 winners have led or been in the first two on straightening.

It won’t be as extreme on Saturday with a soft track likely and the rail out 2.5 metres but leading or being near the speed will be advantageous.

Race 1 – QTIS 2YO Handicap 1200m

North Queensland two-year-old form has held up well in the city this year and AHOOSHU (1) ran a bold race from a wide alley to get close to Sweet Dolly in the Two-Year-Old Jewel at the Gold Coast. The jury is still out on the depth of that race but soft ground and a good gate will help. Michael Cahill rides and with conditions likely to favour front-runners AHOOSHU (1) will be hard to run down.

The most interesting runner is the resuming BALMAURICE (2) which looked above average when winning on debut at Eagle Farm. Rex Lipp has brought him to town after one quiet trial and whilst his Grand Final is some time away a good first-up performance is expected. He is better suited on a bigger track but with Ben Thompson will be hitting the line hard.

Chris Munce tipped MILITARY GAMBLER (3) to make huge improvement last start and he duly delivered at long odds beating STARANTES (5). He meets similar company and with Justin Huxtable taking his full claim can could go on with it.

STARTANTES (5) disappointed last start he got bogged down on the rail and faded late. The gear change may help and he has won at the trip.

Of the unraced BLOOD THUNDER (5) won his trial at Sunshine Coast and the dam has produced two good winners. MISTER LARABEE (7) is a brother to the useful Sparky Lad and Ryan Maloney rides. Watch for support.

Betting strategy: Not having a bet but watching BALMAURICE (2) with an eye to the future

Race 2 – Open Handicap 2020m

In these small fields it is usually the best ride that wins and Jim Byrne got HUMBOLT CURRENT (2) home last start giving the horse a perfect record of three starts for three wins at the track. He rises 2kg but meets a similar field and saves his best form for Queensland.

The old boy MORENDI (7) has been racing well in weaker class over shorter trips. Melissa Kelly has given him four runs to get him fit for this and whilst he hasn’t won for three years he is a Toowoomba Cup winner and with 54kg up to this grade when right.

Another Toowoomba Cup winner ALWARD (1) has now had three starts this time in. He meets HUMBOLT CURRENT (2) 2kg better for a length-and-a-half and added fitness helps but would prefer a firm track.

SIR BARNABUS (4) is due and Michael Cahill has won five times on him previously.

SEAT OF POWER (8) can give a sight if allowed to roll along unpressured.

ROMAKASH (3) is staring at a hat-trick but Eagle Farm is his track and he hasn’t placed here in eight starts.

Betting Strategy: Any of them could win. Staying well clear.

Race 3 – Benchmark 90 Handicap 1615m

A tough race for me as I tipped both CLOAK (1) and SEEINGISBELIEVING (4) last start and whilst both ran well they didn’t deliver.

CLOAK (1) ran in the stronger race last start behind Vanna Girl and whilst the immediate rise in trip to 1600m with 3kg more is some concern his last win was over that journey here. Ryan Maloney takes the mount and has a 38 percent strike rate with David Vandyke. That is enough for me.

SEEINGISBELIEVING (4) is fitter for three outings and fought on solidly behind Guise in a Benchmark 85 last start over 1600m. He drops 2kg and in the small field with Jim Byrne will be near the speed.

Since coming North FOREIGN TERRITORY (5) has racked up three wins for Stuart Kendrick from six starts. This is much harder but soft going suits, he drops 6kg and Sheriden Tomlinson can go forward to control the tempo. If he brings his Sunshine Coast form to Brisbane he can give a sight.

KUBRICK (3) showed improvement last start but has too many convictions for me.

Betting Strategy: Two units to win on CLOAK (1)

Race 4 – Benchmark 78 Handicap 1200m

Two highly promising four-year-olds lift this Benchmark 78 above the mundane.

Brett Cavanough has brought FENDER (4) up from Scone and he is unbeaten first-up having won on debut and when last resuming. He has won four of seven and whilst he found Group and The Kosciuszko company too hard last preparation, this Benchmark 78 on a soft track is highly suitable. With Ryan Maloney to ride he can be the testing material.

David Vandyke steps AMICHE (13) up to Saturday grade after a dominant win when resuming in a midweek Class 3. This is much harder but she has won four of eight starts, drops 1.5kg, Steph Thornton stays on and is likely to get track conditions to suit. From barrier eight AMICHE (13) can go forward, make her own luck and be hard to beat.

The stable’s second runner is the consistent HOLD THE LINE (2) which was narrowly beaten in a good Class 6 by Lashes last start over this trip. Leah Kilner stays on and with her 3kg claim from gate one he will near the speed throughout.

GENZAI THE WOLF (9) has been kept fresh since his barnstorming win beating subsequent winner Sweet Snitty in a Benchmark 72 over 1000m. His best form is at Eagle Farm and this is harder but a strong speed will suit. With Sheriden Tomlinson claiming 3kg GENZAI THE WOLF (9) can pounce late.

Betting Strategy: will watch with interest but not betting

Race 5- Benchmark 72 Handicap 1615m

The Freedmans won here three starts back with EXPRESS PRINCESS (7) in a No Metro Win Handicap and she has subsequently twice been runner-up in midweek races on the Randwick Kensington track the latest being a Benchmark 78 over 1500m where she fought hard to just miss on a heavy track. That form is good enough for this grade and Jim Byrne just needs to overcome the wide gate.

RACING PARADISE (12) has been racing well since joining the Desleigh Forster stable and the trainer has backed him up quickly following a solid third when run down over 1400m in a Class 3 Plate at Eagle Farm last week. His Victorian form includes a win on a soft track and he has won over longer trips than this. Mark Du Plessis gets back on and with 2.5kg less he can give a sight again.

SENRIMA TIDE (1) has always been a consistent performer and has lost nothing since joining Jason Edwards. He comes off a last start Class 4 win at Ipswich and whilst this is harder will enjoy the 3kg claim for Sheriden Tomlinson and can make his own luck.

HALLOWED GIRL (5) returned lame last start but her previous form was strong and won her only start here over 1600m. Larry Cassidy knows how to ride her and if she gets the right tempo can be strong late.

LOVE YERS ALL (9) has been up for a long time but bolted in on a heavy track here last start. The 1615m may test but Andrew Mallyon can go forward from the good gate and defy them to run him down.

Betting strategy: Two units to win on EXPRESS PRINCESS (7)

Race 6 – 3YO Handicap 1600m

Tony Gollan is getting everything out of ABRACADAZZLE (2) which has done nothing wrong this preparation and beat a similar field at Eagle Farm last start. Both his wins have come on soft tracks and he will go forward to make his own luck. Michael Rodd stays on, he carries the same weight and despite the wider draw can repeat.

The stablemate DEAL OF POWER (11) won a moderate Maiden at the Gold Coast on a heavy track at his second outing and the trainer has elected to go straight to Saturday grade. This is harder but DEAL OF POWER (11) is bred for the trip, will handle the ground and gets every chance from gate two with Georgina Cartwright and 54kg.

Steven O’Dea and Matt Hoysted have given TUMBLER RIDGE (1) three runs this time in and he showed last start he may be returning to his best when running on behind Rollinwiththeflow over 1350m here. Last preparation TUMBLER RIDGE (1) placed twice at Listed level and has always raced as through 1600m will suit. He is well placed with Justin Huxtable’s 1.5kg claim and will be strong late.

CRIMINAL DEFENCE (6) filled the minor placing in the Rollinwiththeflow race. He keeps threatening to win but slow getaways don’t help. He will go back again from his wide gate but Adin Thomson will have him charging home.

BETTER GET SET (4) beat his stablemate TUMBLER RIDGE (1) home when runner-up over 1350m here last start. The step up to 1600m poses some concerns and blinkers come off but he has the speed to go forward and keep out of trouble.

Betting strategy: Think Tony Gollan might win it but not sure with which one. No bet for me.

Race 7 – 3YO Quality Handicap 1050m

If it hadn’t been for two starts at Eagle Farm a track which some don’t handle SIMPLY FLY (1) would be unbeaten. He has won all four starts since resuming and was good to us last start when winning the Jewel at the Gold Coast. He drops back in trip and has the steadier of 60.5kg but is a class performer and Steph Thornton knows how to ride him. There is no reason why he can’t win again.

BALLISTIC LOVER (6) is from the Joe Pride stable and won her maiden first-up last preparation at Wyong before winning two of her next four starts in NSW. She resumes on the back of a solid trial and whilst taking on good company here has speed and may be the one they have to run down.

SNAPPY REPLY (11) was heavily supported but played up in the gates and did herself no favours when resuming. Jim Byrne replaces Georgina Cartwright and she can improve sharply.

ZINGALONG (5) just keeps turning up and ran a good third from a wide gate to Toorooloo last start over this trip. He drops 4.5kg and will be prominent for a long way.

XERRI (9) beat a weak field comfortably when resuming at the Sunshine Coast. This is harder but he has potential and the wet track will suit.

Betting Strategy: Will just be watching.

Race 8 – Open Handicap 1200m

I find it hard to go past JADENTOM (1) which has 59.5kg but she has earned it winning 13 of her 30 starts and was strong first-up when beating Outback Barbie at the Gold Coast. The Rothesay mare has won twice at the trip here and a wet track won’t bother her. From gate four Andrew Mallyon will give JADENTOM (1) the gun run and she will be hard to beat again.

CONSTANT FLIGHT (5) has now had two runs back for David Vandyke following a long lay-off and wasn’t disgraced when runner-up to Vanna Girl last start. Ben Thompson retains the ride and he will be prominent for a long way.

RACECOURSE ROAD (2) was too slick when resuming over 1000m at the Gold Coast. He goes well here, has won second-up and will give them something to chase.

I am not convinced about ROYAL WITNESS (6) over 1200m and EPIC GIRL’s (8) gate is no help.

Betting strategy: She owes me nothing JADENTOM (1) so I am happy to have two units to win on her

Race 9 – Class 6 Plate 1350m

Mares coming from southern states often blossom in Queensland and WONDERFUL RIRI (12) has done a good job since coming north winning at Doomben midweek and following up with a good second in a Benchmark 80 over 1200m at Eagle Farm. This extra distance suits and with Ben Thompson from gate six she will be perfectly placed throughout.

ROYAL HALE (2) cost me last start when he got too far back but wasn’t far away at the end and is worth another chance. Ryan Maloney replaces Michael Rodd and now third-up the 1350m will suit. He can make amends.

GEM OF SCOTLAND (5) has now had two outings since resuming from a long injury break and gets some gear changes including a tongue-tie. She drops significantly in grade from last start and as a winner of six of 12 starts, two of which are at Doomben, is well placed with 57kg. Steph Thornton rides and with cover from gate ten GEM OF SCOTLAND (5) will be hard to hold out.

ACCESSION (3) is yet another of these Sydney horses that Chris Waller has brought north to win a race. He has had two outings in Saturday Benchmark races behind Emanate and Yao Dash to prepare for this Brisbane Class 6 Plate. ACCESSION (3) placed in the Group 3 Ken Russell and Group 2 Sires Produce when last in Queensland and whilst it has been a long time between drinks gets a chance to find some form.

I blackbooked GUNTANTES (4) last start after he gave them a big start and charged home to just miss over 1200m in a similar Class 6 Handicap. He rises 4kg and is poorly drawn but gets Robbie Fradd and the extra distance suits.

Betting Strategy: Two units on WONDERFUL RIRI (12) to win
