A year on from his triumph in The Metropolitan on a Group 1 cleansweep day for Chris Waller, Come Play With Me finds himself racing in the goldfields 3400km away from the big smoke in Sydney.
It was just 12 months ago that Come Play With Me was the talk of racing circles after giving Waller his third major race winner of the day to complement the Group 1 wins of stablemates Kolding in the Epsom and Funstar in the Flight Stakes.
Fast forward a year and the stayer is back with his WA trainer Adam Durrant and set to compete in Saturday’s Listed Kalgoorlie Cup (2200m) where he has been slugged with the weight impost of 62kg and is rated a $6.50 chance with TAB.
Durrant will be trackside watching his charge from the Blue Spec Room at Kalgoorlie, 600km east of Perth.
It was the same place he was 12 months ago when cheering Come Play With Me onto Group 1 glory.
“I had First Affair run second in the Kalgoorlie Cup last year and people were probably wondering why I was so happy to run second – it was because Come Play With Me had won the Metrop,” Durrant told Racenet.
“We own him and we bred him and he had won four in a row before he left us to go to Chris Waller.
“I didn’t want to go to Sydney because I am busy enough at home.”
Come Play With Me won the Metropolitan at $8.50 last year but nothing went right in a preparation for Waller earlier this year so he was sent home.

The six-year-old resumed running fifth in the Coolgardie Cup over 1760m last month and was good late.
Durrant knows he has the class to win the Kalgoorlie Cup, in the goldfields region, but says the concern is a month between runs as well as the big weight.
“He has got a big weight and it hasn’t been a trouble-free prep as he has had a couple of little hiccups,” Durrant says.
“He picked up some little allergies and wasn’t quite himself in some of his workouts.”
