Trainer Kris Lees has booked a Caulfield Cup jockey but the leading trainer remains undecided if his classy stayer Mugatoo will contest the $5 million handicap on October 17.
Lees and Mugatoo’s Australian Bloodstock ownership group has secured the services of 10-time Group 1-winning rider John Allen.
But Mugatoo is not completely locked in to run in the Caulfield Cup with connections also considering the possibility of a start in the Group 1 Cox Plate (2000m) a week later.
“It’s still up in the air but there is no doubt he’s attractively weighted in the Caulfield Cup,” Lees said.
“There’s a lot of things to weigh up.
“Will the race be as strong as it’s been in recent years?
“Does he run a mile and a half strongly enough to win the Caulfield Cup. The 53.5 kilos does help, it’s an attractive weight.
“Would he even get a start in the Cox Plate.
“There’s plenty to think about.”

Lees said the 3kg weight swing against Mugatoo’s The Metropolitan conqueror Mirage Dancer in the Caulfield Cup is also another “attractive” factor.
“He ran third in the race last year when he got off the plane so he’s a good horse to get a line on and we got that on Saturday,” he said.
“He carried 56kg in the race last year and this year he’s got 55kg so that reads well.
“Mugatoo’s come through the run really well so now we just keep things ticking over.
“The latest round of acceptances are out today so that more information that will help us make the right decision for the horse and his owners.”
Mugatoo is at $21 in the Caulfield Cup and rated a $41 chance for the Cox Plate.
