Sandown: Ranveer shows his class in the heavy conditions to score maiden win

There were no potential stars standing in Ranveer’s way this time.

Ranveer bumped into the brilliant colt Profiteer on debut at Flemington last December. Profiteer posted an easy win over Ranveer before going on to win the $2m Inglis Millennium in Sydney.

Ranveer missed the hectic Blue Diamond period over the summer but the extra time to develop could be a bonus for the Winning Rupert colt.

The two-year-old wasn’t at his best in the heavy ground but was too strong for his rivals in the Clanbrooke Racing Handicap (1000m).

Jockey Ben Melham guided Ranveer ($2.90 fav) through the mud to score by three-quarters of a length over the fast-finishing first-starter Our Heidi ($8.50) and the honest Rambeau ($18).

“He’s a lovely colt. Obviously, today’s conditions weren’t ideal for him but we just nursed him along,” Melham said.

Laurie said he was concerned about Ranveer’s fitness for the testing heavy conditions at Sandown but the youngster would markedly improve on the outing.

“I felt that he probably hadn’t done enough work for this surface today but was hoping class would take him through,” Laurie said.

“But he looked like he was running one empty a fair way from home to my eye.

“He’ll come on a hell of a lot from that. There’s an 1100m race maybe at Caulfield in a fortnight. I was thinking of something like that. Then we’ll back off and prepare him for the spring.”

Ranveer’s win was Melham’s first city win, and fifth in 19 rides, in a strong return to riding from a betting-related suspension late last month.
