SuperCoach Racing Round 7: Rob Sutherland’s metric picks for Oaks Day

After just 48 hours to regather our thoughts it’s on to round seven of SuperCoach Racing and Oaks Day.

There’s just the one Group 1 and two Group 3 races so you’ll want to target those races in particular. Luckily stable values are up, in fact I’ve $650K unspent this round!

For those who are new to this column, each week I rank the leading contenders that offer a, hopefully, winning blend of popularity in the betting market and cheap SuperCoach price.

To compare apples with apples I have added a weighting to reflect the different points on offer for Group 1, 2, 3 and non black type races.

Below I list the 30 best rated horses, run through the stable I have selected and then throw in a bit of bonus analysis on the jockeys too.

THE 25 TOP-RATED HORSES FOR ROUND ONE (GROUP ONE IN BOLD):

FROM THIS LIST I HAVE SELECTED THE FOLLOWING STABLE OF 11 HORSES

Let’s get straight to the Group 1 Oaks, I’m taking the top three rated runners in the race in Miravalle, Montefilia and Personal. The hot favourite is Montefilia and it’s easy to see why as she comes into this having won the Group 1 Flight (1,600m) and then G1 Spring Champion Stakes (2,000m) at her last start. She’ll be my captain. Personal finished bridesmaid at her last two starts and looks like the major threat to Montefilia – tricky barrier though. I’m throwing in Miravalle too, she’s cheap due to having a poor strike rate but looks like she’ll get the distance.

The G3 Ottawa is another cheap race. Fake Love won her first start in very nice style and Tempest Love missed the jump at her debut and then flew home. Hard to split them so I took both.

Written Beauty looks like a very good thing in the other G3 of the day, her only loss was on a bog track and she won by 3.5 lengths at her last start on Manikato night.

November Dreaming scored a good win last start on Geelong Cup Day and I’m counting on her to get the Beasts off to a fast start in the first of the day.

Ancestry has done nothing but win this spring and was dominant last start on Cox Plate day.

I Am Eloquent comes back in class here having run second in the G# Tesio at her last start. She’s not a lock, but good enough for me.

There are challengers to both my remaining horses but Housay has two wins and a place from three starts so far in his career and Tinandali is an Irish import just finding his feet in Australia. One will be reserve and I’m not yet sure which.

AND NOW TO THE JOCKEYS

Quality or quantity? Whichever you value more will probably decide your choice here. Craig Williams has a full book but just one runner under $5 and five under $10.

Hugh Bowman has three fewer rides than Williams, but four of those are under $5 (including Montefilia) and a further is under $10.

I’ll go Hughie – I think.
