Barty breaks TV ratings records in drought-ending Australian Open win

Ash Barty’s drought-breaking Australian Open win smashed television ratings records, with a peak audience of 4.261 million and an average audience of 3.577 million.

According to Australian Open broadcaster Nine, the match was the most watched women’s final since OzTam started keeping records in 1999. The figures would have made it one of the most viewed events of 2021.

Just over three million of the peak audience viewers tuned in from the five major metropolitan cities. Remarkably, the trophy presentation had a higher average audience (2.838 million) among major metropolitan viewers than the match itself.

The trophy presentation would have been the second most watched program of 2021, trailing only the AFL grand final.

Nine also enjoyed record ratings for the men’s doubles final, which featured Nick Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis winning their maiden major.

The doubles drew a peak audience of 3.154 million and a national average audience of 2.297 million, according to Nine.

Those figures are also the highest for a men’s doubles final in OzTam’s history.
