‘King Richard’ movie trailer: Will Smith stars in biopic about father of Serena, Venus Williams

Serena Williams and Venus Williams didn’t become two of the greatest tennis players of all time overnight. It took a lot of work, discipline and training to reach the pinnacle of tennis. 

Their father, Richard Williams, helped them get there, and now, the world is going to know more about the family’s journey to epic heights.

Warner Bros. is releasing a biopic called “King Richard,” which will focus on the life of Richard Williams, played by Will Smith. As the studio details, the movie will tell the story of how Richard brought Venus and Serena “from the streets of Compton, California to the global stage as legendary icons.”

Based on the true story that will inspire the world, ‘King Richard’ follows the journey of Richard Williams, an undeterred father instrumental in raising two of the most extraordinarily gifted athletes of all time, who will end up changing the sport of tennis forever. Driven by a clear vision of their future and using unconventional methods, Richard has a plan that will take Venus and Serena Williams from the streets of Compton, California to the global stage as legendary icons. ‘King Richard’ is a profoundly moving film that shows the power of family, perseverance and unwavering belief as a means to achieve the impossible and impact the world.

On Wednesday, July 28, the first trailer for the new movie was released. Here’s a look at it from Warner Bros. Pictures.

That’ll certainly be something that tennis fans want to check out when Nov. 19 rolls around.

Richard Williams started coaching Venus and Serena at an early age and helped to inspire their tennis careers. Combined, the two won 122 singles titles (including 30 major titles) and 28 doubles titles under their father’s coaching.
